For the Greeks, issues of holiness always had something to do with the gods and it was the charges of unholiness or impiety that brought Socrates to trial.
In a famous discourse with religious expert, Euthyphro, Socrates expressed reservations about the cruelty and inconstancy of the Greek gods. He also questioned the idea of piety itself. Where does piety originate: in the thing itself, or the gods’ love for it?
Llamas playfully makes a pun of holy and holey. The bowl of cereal with Cheerios floating together in a sea of milk reminds us of the similarities of many beliefs, while the singular Cheerio that floats over the rest symbolizes the way people often privilege their own beliefs over all others.
